Lungfish Architects delivers Warwickshire special educational needs school

Lungfish Architects has delivered the design of a new, multi-million pound special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school in Warwickshire.

The Warwickshire Academy will provide dedicated support for 80 SEND children along with those who have social, emotional, and mental health needs from the ages of nine to 19.

Designed on the conversion of the school’s existing building, Lungfish Architects has created a bespoke SEND school that aims to safeguard children while empowering their learning and cultural understanding.

The new school includes all the features of a modern educational environment including a dining hall, sports pavilion, food technology department and science rooms that deliver for the needs of its students. Special adaptations have been made to the classrooms and teaching areas to create a more flexible space that enable the teachers to deliver an individualised learning setting.

Increased security measures have been subtly designed, negating any risks to student safety both within the school and surrounding car park and playing areas.

The school has welcomed its first September cohort of pupils who will benefit from the use of a dedicated SEND-designed learning environment.

Construction of the school was delivered by ASHE Construction for Warwickshire County Council.

Simon Reid, managing director at Lungfish Architects, said: "There is a growing demand for SEND provision in the UK and it’s important that we ensure learning environments across the public estate are designed and well equipped to meet young people’s needs.

"Safeguarding children while attempting to maximise their education experience lay at the heart of the school’s design. From the outset, we wanted to create a bespoke space that was flexible and could adapt to the varying needs of the pupils that joined the school. The sports facilities and large classroom spaces will provide a supportive environment that will allow young people to thrive outside of the mainstream school setting.

"We’re proud to see our designs and visions for the school become a reality and hope that young people and their families can continue to benefit from what the school has to offer many years to come."
