An architect in the making

Architectural Assistant Seb Mathewson joined Lungfish in 2018, bringing with him a real talent for project visualisation. He’s already using his skills to help our clients picture their projects and he’s excited about building a future as part of the team.

Hi Seb, what do you do at Lungfish?

I’m an architectural assistant, so I spend my time supporting the team in all sorts of ways, on all sorts of projects. I do a lot of visualisation, which is about creating accurate images of proposed projects to bring our concepts to life for clients. It’s an important part of bringing people on board and making sure everyone knows what to expect as the build evolves.

What made you want to join the team?

I’m working towards becoming an architect, so I’m here at Lungfish part-time while I study for my Part 2 at The University of Nottingham. I’d been working at a practice in Sheffield for a year after my Part 1 and I was looking for something a bit different – and a bit closer to home.

I’d already been working on large-scale education projects, so I wanted to continue that focus on evolving end-user needs. But I also wanted to be part of a smaller, more connected team where I could get really involved in projects rather than feeling like a small cog in a big machine. Because Lungfish is part of Scape Group, you get all the benefits of being in a close-knit, agile practice, plus the advantages of being part of something bigger too. It’s a great fit for me.

What do you like about the Lungfish approach?

We’ve got a really strong, design-led process where we work closely with clients throughout. It’s so rewarding to see projects developing all the way from concept to completion, and to take our clients on that journey too.

It’s a completely transparent way of working. We’re very up front with our clients so they know exactly what they’ll be getting from the outset. Then, because everything’s pre-costed and our timescales are so quick, we can deliver a finished building very efficiently. We can confidently say, “in two weeks we’ll have this done”, knowing we can deliver on that promise. It’s very fast moving.

Another thing I like about Lungfish is that everyone knows each other really well. It’s almost a family atmosphere – very friendly and welcoming. Everyone’s approachable and happy to help, offering support and advice, which is great for me while I’m still studying. Together they’ve got a lot of fantastic experience, so it’s a nice place to be.

What’s been your biggest achievement so far?

In my last practice, I put together some visuals which helped one of our designs win a major contract. That was a great feeling. I moved to Lungfish before the project got on site, but I’ll be walking past it every day once work begins, so it’ll be great to see it come to life.

Tell us a bit about yourself outside work…

Well, at the moment I’m spending a lot of time at university or studying, but when I get some spare time I love playing rugby or going to festivals. The highlight of last summer was definitely heading out to Croatia for a big festival there.

I’m also qualified to fly a glider by myself, although I don’t often get the chance at the moment. I went to a military-based boarding school with lots of connections to the RAF and the Army, and I used to go flying regularly – I actually won a gliding scholarship, so I spent a lot of time in the air.

What are your ambitions for the future?

First, I want to finish my degree and become a fully qualified architect. After that, I’d like to develop my career and progress within the Lungfish team, helping create more great projects for our clients. Maybe one day I’ll have my own practice, or build my own house, who knows? I’m looking forward to finding out.
