The Griffin
Primary School

Several housing developments consisting of more than 1,000 new homes in Rugby has meant that Warwickshire County Council has been faced with a growing pressure to meet school place demand. Lying in the middle of these developments is the brand-new Griffin Primary School and Little Griffin Nursery, a one-form entry primary school, and a separate, standalone 40-place nursery.

Part funded through S106 contributions, the £6.7m project was completed on time, opening its doors to its first cohort of pupils at the start of the 2023-24 academic year.

Solution

Working closely with Warwickshire County Council through a series of client engagement meetings, we developed a solution that would utilise both traditional construction and modular, offsite techniques.

The Griffin Primary School comprises of seven classrooms, a hall, a kitchen and office spaces. Built traditionally, it covers an area of 1,270m² and is accessible to those with disabilities, with level access and wide doors throughout. Boasting a spectacular 7m-wide learning street - ideal for group working, breakout zones and one-to-one support - each classroom benefits from a bright and modern learning environment that invokes optimal attainment.

The Little Griffin Nursery is of modular design and was manufactured offsite before being craned into position onsite. This allowed for both projects to be constructed alongside each other, as well as reducing site waste and construction traffic on the new estate. The building itself is standalone to the main school building, minimising noise and disruption to the youngest pupils and consists of lobby and cloak area, classroom, WCs, and a separate accessible toilet, food prep/staff area and meeting room.

Externally, a range of play spaces have also been incorporated to allow pupils, staff and visitors to enjoy the outdoors. Working closely with the school and council, we’ve included extensive landscaping, playing fields, and new tree and wildflower seeding areas.

Additionally, the school has been designed in a way that will allow future extensions to be added easily, without compromising on quality. In addition, the Griffin Primary School and the Little Griffin Nursery are both available for community use and hire.
