Requirements

Lungfish Architects was appointed as part of a multidisciplinary consultant team to support the project through feasibility and concept design, helping to shape a vision for a new skills academy, research and conference facility. The brief involved the evaluation of potential development sites alongside the design of a flexible destination capable of supporting a wide range of educational and industry-focused activities.

The design needed to balance complex operational, environmental and infrastructure constraints while accommodating future growth, accessibility and safeguarding requirements. Bringing together specialist workshops, laboratories, teaching spaces and conference facilities, the development sought to create a collaborative learning environment that could evolve alongside the needs of its users.

Sustainability was a key driver throughout the project, with targets for Net Zero Carbon in Operation and BREEAM Excellent certification informing the design approach. Passive environmental principles, energy-efficient design and long-term operational performance were embedded from the earliest stages of development.

Solution

Lungfish Architects led the strategic briefing, site evaluation, and concept design process, shaping a clear vision for a future-focused hub for learning, research, and innovation. Through a structured feasibility study, multiple development opportunities were explored and evaluated to identify the most appropriate site and organisational strategy, ensuring the facility could respond to both immediate requirements and future growth.

Centred around the journey of learning, the design brought together workshops, laboratories, classrooms, conference facilities and collaborative social spaces within a highly adaptable environment. A central atrium and exhibition space formed the heart of the building, creating opportunities for collaboration and interaction between students, researchers, educators and industry partners.

Drawing inspiration from innovation, technological advancement and precision engineering, the architectural approach combined contemporary forms, carefully considered materials and a strong civic presence. The result was a bold yet flexible concept, designed to inspire learning, foster collaboration and establish a distinctive landmark within the wider campus.

Outcome

The concept design established a clear framework for the future development of a landmark education, research and innovation facility. Designed to support the long-term ambitions of the wider campus, the proposals created a flexible environment capable of evolving alongside changing educational, technological and industry requirements.

Sustainability was embedded throughout the design process, with the concept developed to support ambitious Net Zero Carbon in Operation aspirations and a BREEAM Excellent target. Passive design measures, including optimised building orientation, solar shading, natural daylight and ventilation strategies, were integrated from the outset to reduce operational energy demand while promoting user comfort and wellbeing.

Site planning carefully balanced environmental considerations, biodiversity enhancement and opportunities for future expansion, ensuring the development could adapt to changing operational requirements over time.
