I have recently graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree in Interior Architecture and Design and came across the opportunity for an internship at Lungfish Architects. This felt very apt as one door was about to close and another one was potentially about to open.
A huge smile appeared on my face when I received the news that Lungfish Architects would like to take me on for this role. I saw this as an amazing opportunity to gain experience in the educational sector within a practice; this was an area that I became passionate about during my research project in my final year of studies.
I was instantly put to work on live projects, putting my creative skills to the test to design a feature reception desk for Cotton End Forest School. Furthermore, the team instantly made me feel very welcome within the open plan office that’s home to the other businesses within Scape Group.
A highlight of my time at Lungfish was a meeting with Kier Group regarding the live and future school projects sited in Bedford. This was a great insight into how Lungfish liaises with contractors, as well as how they iron out any potential issues on site. With my PPE at the ready Richard, Kieran and myself went over to visit two schools in progress.
It was great to get a real understanding of modular school builds and how they help the local communities. I have also thoroughly enjoyed producing visuals for various projects, it has been great to put my university skills into practice.
From site visits and meetings to creating visuals, concepts and finishes palettes, I have developed existing skills further whilst learning new ones that I would only experience by working on exciting live projects.
Being given the invaluable role as intern at Lungfish Architects has been an insightful and wonderful experience – I felt comfortable from day one within such a welcoming team and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and experience here.
So I was delighted to hear that my internship was to be extended at the practice until I go travelling near the end of the year to South America. I am very excited to get my teeth sunk into the live and upcoming Lungfish projects as well as putting my design skills to the test.
